Louie, a service dog-in-training, came to visit me at my house today!
This was my home visit day where the two trainers came and checked out my house and yard. They offered tips on what would help make this adventure a little easier on me. (Extra baby gates, maybe the garbage can under the sink.) They also emphasized the points regarding how the kids may (and may not) play and interact with the puppy. All good information to have them hear and for me to review.
Lots of business issues were covered, but we also had plenty of relaxed conversation, too. They talked easily with the kids and showed them some of the things Louie can already do. The boys were most impressed with his ability to shut cabinets and drawers. (If only our puppy could be taught to close their dresser drawers for them!) Haley learned how to "trade" with Louie when he had her baby doll. She gave him a treat, he gave her the doll. No chasing, pulling, or yelling needed. Not that she was about to do any of those things to get the doll, but I suppose some kids might. And the "trade" idea is a good tool for both my kids and their friends and cousins to use.
Tomorrow the kids will be coming with me to visit the puppies! More pictures coming soon...
